“No man ever spoke like this Man!” John 7:46 NKJV
IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD. You just can't say what John, The Beloved (or The Baptist for that matter) said without poetry, without something akin to joy, a bit untamed, rummaging about the heart and igniting the warm center where it finds speech. Like the sudden arousal of deep memory. Peter, Paul, David, Job, Ruth, the prophets… Christ made poets of them all. All spoke with a barefooted majesty.
It's also perhaps a slight mockery the way Jesus chose the twelve, defying a world of opinion, trusting the most exalted things to the lowborn, to the untutored, the baser metal of the earth, the common stock of humanity, these men who would change worlds and kingdoms. Love is fun that way. And so disturbing.
In Christ, this high music in me, Amen
